Suppose you made a test sample on a microsope slide by attaching a small square of transparent plastic with a refractive index of 1.2. What would the sample look like if you used phase contrast to visuallize it. What if you used DIC? Assume that the sample is small enough that you can see the whole object in the microscope.

The cellular structures will get illuminated and seems to be bright in phage contrast where as in DIC also image will look similar but lacks bright diffraction halo.

Presence of cover slip with 1.2 refractive index can be considered as extention on front lens element.But within immersion objective it might lead to chromatic aberration which increases thickness of cover slip and dispersion.
