3. A deep ocean drilling pipe (0.2 m diameter) has broken and you are asked to estimate the rate

of flow of the resulting petroleum leak. A velocity of 0.09 m/s (average across the plume) is

estimated using acoustic measurements at a height of 200m above the outlet. The ambient

fluid can be assumed to be quiescent. The effluent density is estimated to be 0.5% less than

that of the surrounding seawater.

a. Determine the outflow volume flux from the pipe along with the exit velocity using

the assumption that the flow is plume-like at the measurement location.

b. Determine the height above the pipe exit at which the momentum flux due to

buoyancy is equal to the initial jet momentum flux. Argue whether the plume

assumption in part (a) is justifiable.

Solution

The outflow volume flux is 67.

The heightof the above pipe at the exit is 45 m.

These are the answers of the following given problem.
