Describe how a deficit of vitamin D would affect:
a. bones
b. serum calcium level
Solution
Vitamin D is a sunshine hormone helps in calcium absorption and keeps our bones healthy.Calcium stored in our bones, our body need calcium in blood serum for its normal functioning.
It is regulated by parathyroid hormone(PTH) blood calcium and vitamin D .When blood calcium is low in our body bones starts to release Ca and an exessive or long term release of Ca results in poor brittle bones and muscles. The low blood Ca level is detected by PTH and signals kidney to produce Vitamin D which contains the precursor(1,25 OH)2 D) for vitamin D.When the blood Ca level rises the bones stop releasing Ca .
