Secondly, explain why energy is not just provided by the simple hydrolysis of ATP.

Solution

Adenosine triphosphate is the energy currency of the cell.  ATP is an RNA nucleotide and has a chain of three phosphate groups attached to it. There is phosphoanhydride bonds between the phosphate groups. The phosphate groups carry negative charge and are broken down by hydrolysis or breakdown of water. Hydrolysis of ATP to ADP is reversible.

Under standard conditions, G for hydrolysis of one mole of ATP into ADP and Pi is 7.3 kcal/mol. In living cells however, the value of G is around 14 kcal/mol. Energy released through ATP hydrolysis is used to power other reactions through shared intermediates.
