Travelling waves are inherently related simple harmonic motion, but waves and SHM are not the same thing Discuss the similarities and difference in depth. Consider, for example whether it is possible to use a driven harmonic oscillator to produce travelling waves?

Solution

Travelling waves carry energy from one point of space to another point of space , during the wave propagation there is SHM motion on each point of the wave, On the other hand SHM is the oscillation or vibration about a mean position, in SHM energy is not be carried from one place to another , rather energy is been converted from kinetic to potential and vice versa .wave propagation can be illustrated as the combination of many SHM of particles of fields.

Sound waves in the air produce SHM , the diaphragm of the ear or the speaker will undergo SHM due to sound waves.

a paper floating on the water waves will undergo SHM.

When the waves travelling on the string , evey bit of particle on the string will undergo SHM , the kinetic enregy of the particle on the string is maximum at extrem positions , but the enrgy is been transferred from one portion of the string to another , with each portion exicuting SHM motion.

in the case of simple SHM energy is not transfered any where rather change the form from KE to PE and vice versa.
