Enzyme play a very important role in metabolism. Metabolism can be divided into two parts: 1. Catabolism &

2. Anabolism

1. Catabolism: Catabolism is the process in which a large molecule degrades into smaller molecules.

2. Anabolism: Anabolism is the process in which a large molecule formed from smaller molecules.

Mechanism of enzyme action: Enzymes bind with the active site of molecules and form substrate- enzyme complex. This substrate enzyme complex further dissociate into product and enzyme. By forming substrate enzyme complex, enzyme lowers the activation energy for the reaction and hence speed up the reaction.

Example : In the production of high fructose corn syrup, amylases are used for the production of sugars from starch. amylases are also used in backing to breakdown of startch in flours to sugars (Catabolism). Formation of larger sugars from glucose molecule ( lactose from glucose) by using enzyme is the example of anabolism.
