A concave spherical mirror has a radius of curvature of magnitude 13.4 cm. Determine the object position for which the resulting image is inverted and larger than the object by a factor of 9.00. cm Draw a ray diagram to determine the position of the image. (Do this on paper. Your instructor may ask you to turn in this work.) Is the image real or virtual? real virtual

Solution

The focal length f = r/2 = 13.4 / 2 = +6.7 cm

The image is upright, magnified and virtual v = - 9 u

1/u + 1/(-v) = 1/f

1/u - 1/(9u) = 1/f

(9 - 1) / 9 u = 1/ 6.7

8 / 9 u = 1 / 6.7

u = 5.96 cm

image is real
