what is the volume per revolution of a compressor having two pistons, each will a diameter of 3 i ches and a stroke of 3 inches?

Solution

V = cross-sectional area of cylinder * distance travelled by piston per stroke

i.e., V =( 3.14*D^(2)*L)/4

where V = volume in cc (cubic inches), D = diameter of cylinder bore in cm inches, L = stroke of piston in cm (inches)

V = (3.14*3*3*3)/4 = 21.195 cu. inches.

Since the compressor has 2 pistons and let us assume it runs at 1750rpm, then,

The volume of gas that one piston of the compressor can handle per revolution of the shaft = (22.8*1750*2)/1728

= 46.18 cu. ft/min

(1 cu. ft = 1728 cu. inches)
