How do the physical properties of polysaccharides such as ov
How do the physical properties of polysaccharides- such as overall size, shape, branching and composition relate to their biological function.
Could someone answer this question clearly for me please, I\'m studying for an exam and it\'s one of the concept review questions.
Solution
These all things varies upon the polysaccharide as for eg if we consider starch it is made up of 2 units called amylose and amylopectin.. It serves as a primary storage for plants.. It is present in the branching form which is different in amylose and amylopectin..
Similarly glycogen is similar to the amylopectin structure but more dense and compact act as a storage in animal and humans . fungi etc.. They are made up of the alpha glucose units..
Wheares in case of cellulose it is made up of beta glucose units which serves as a wall in the plants body.. Hence due to the difference between the composition of glucose units the composition, branching and function also differs..!!
