Solution

Answer A)

Let us know what exactly Emphysema is first before going into details about its connection of heart failure. It is a lung disease that develops after many years of smoking where the main symptoms are collapsed bronchiole and enlarged alveoli. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a group of lung disease to which Emphysema belongs. Emphysema leads to damage in walls of alveoli in lungs leading to its destruction along with lung tissue. This leads to collapse of bronchial tubes causing a blockage and will allow less oxygen to move to bloodstream.

The conditions of Emphysema and heart failure are different but are connected at times. Emphysema makes it difficult to send oxygen to bloodstream as lung is unable to exhale the air causing breathing problems. In case of heart failure, the heart is unable to pump right amount of blood. In both the cases, the patient face breathing problem. The breathing problem can be caused by both.

In case of emphysema, lung is unable to bring in enough oxygen due to constricted alveoli and blockage. Thus, on exhaling, required amount of oxygen is not pushed in the bloodstream and oxygen is trapped in damaged tissue. Thus patients face breathlessness while inhaling. In case of heart failure, under exertion heart should be able to pump blood harder to body and lungs. But in case of heart failure, heart is unable to fulfill the blood demand for body and blood fills in lungs leading to congestion and breathlessness. Now, this congestion leads to less passing of oxygen in bloodstream which causes emphysema.

Answer B)

COPD is something that affects millions of people due to their habit of smoking. Due to blockage of arterioles it leads to breathlessness as enough oxygen is not released in the bloodstream. During dental treatment, COPD patient should be treated by making them sit upright in dental chair as lying down makes it more difficult for them to breathe. It is important COPD patients have good oral hygiene as periodontal bacteria may cause infection in respiratory tract with it being carried forward to lungs.
