For each of these tropic hormones, list the hormone that is stimulated for release from the pituitary, the target organ of that hormone, what hormones are released from the target organ, and their effects. Prolactin releasing hormone Thyrotropin releasing hormone Corticotropic releasing hormone Gonadotropin releasing hormone
Solution
Prolactin releasing hormone - Anterior pituitary secretes PRH, Prolactin is secreted with the stimulation of PRH. Target organ is mammary glands. Milk production is initiated by this.
Thyrotropin releasing hormone - TRH is secreted by hypothalamus. TRF stimulates anterior pituitary to secrete TSH.TSH target organ is thyroid gland and secretes T3 and T4. It helps in metabolism and growth.
Corticotropic releasing hormone - stimulates anterior pituitary to produce adreno cortico tropic hormone. adrenal glands are the target organs and stimulate the secretion of glucocorticoid steroid hormones from adrenal cortex cells, especially in the zona fasciculata of the adrenal glands. glucocorticoids upregulate the anti inflammatory mechanisms and also play a role in metabolism.
Gonadotropin releasing hormone - GnRH stimulates the anterior pituitary to release Follicle Stimulating Hormone and Luteinising hormone. FSH simulates the growth of germ cells in both male and female. Gonads are the target organs. In females, an acute rise of Luteinizing Hormone triggers ovulation and development of the corpus luteum. In males, it stimulates Leydig cell production of testosterone.
