In kinetics, how do you decide if an object has a tangential component of acceleration? For example, when you swing a pail in a vertical circle, it only has a normal component and no tangential component when it reaches the top of the circle.

Solution
check whether there is any force in tangential direction on object.
if there is tangentially zero net force then
from newton\'s 2nd law,
Fnet = m a = 0
hence tangential acc. will be zero.
so if there is no force in tangential direction (Or zero net force) , then there will be
 no tangential component of acc.
