Is more time less time or equivalent time needed to kill all
Is more time, less time or equivalent time needed to kill all the cells in a population of 1,000,000 cells compared with killing all the cells in a population of 100 cells? Click the answer you think is right. The same time More time Less time
Solution
The killing time of the cells depends on efficacy of the killing agent. Imagine two situations given below.
1) Cells are being killed using a disinfactant - In this case each cell must be exposed to a threshold quantity or concentration of the disinfactant for a minimum threshold time of exposure. If these conditiones are met then the time required to kill either 100 or 1000000 cells will be precisely same.
2) Cells are killed using radiations - In such case, if the cells are properly exposed to the radiation then the time taken in killing either 100 or 1000000 cells will be same.
In a nutshell, the cell-killing will only depend on the fact how well and homogeneously the cells are exposed to the killing agents used.
