Describe 5 sensory experiences (1 for each sense - vision, hearing, taste, smell, and touch) and how top-down and bottom-up processing are both necessary in understanding the experience. For example: 1 walked into a store and heard a few notes of music. Bottom-up processing is when the music notes generated sound waves that stared the neural processing in the car. Top-down processing is when my previous experience with those notes, helped me to identify the name of the song. Provide a similar type example for each sense.

Regarding the stop sign,we first visually perceive the octagonal red sign we all know so well.This initial perception comes from the environment and appears to be bottom-up.But, how do we even know what a stop sign is? we know the action we must take when this stop sign is perceived due to top-down processing.We get this from perceptual hypothesis,which is rooted in our knowledge and information about previous experiences.

Hearing:

At first,listeners were played a speech recording and start listening to the words concentratedly due to bottom up processing.Again,listeners were played a speech recording in which a certain syllable had been deleted and replaced by a noise burst.Because of the linguistic context,the listeners also heard the removed syllable,and were able to identify exactly where the masking noise burst had occurred due to top down processing.

Taste:

The blind taste challenge is an example of bottom-up processing because it is based on being exposed to a stimulus,then analyzing it later.When the chefs eat the food,there is no outside interference,which is due to the blindfolds and headphones.The chefs taste receptors are the only receptors working during the challenge.The gustatory cortex analyzes the taste of the food,and the chefs are then asked which food it is they are tasting.Using bottom-up processing,the chefs are able to taste the food,then determine which food they are eating,using their memory.

Top-down processing has a large affect on taste.For example,pretend an individual were to pick up a cup,thinking it was their drink that they already drank from,when it was actually someone else’s.Their brain expects the drink is going to taste one particular way because that specific taste is what the brain previously perceived the drink to taste like.The drink will taste worse than it would normally taste under normal circumstances because of top-down processing.The individual’s prior knowledge of what the drink tasted like was erased.Our brains are so highly developed that this process occurs automatically at an extremely rapid pace.

Smell:

Have you ever found yourself trying to figure out what a particular smell and thought it was familiar but you were not able to pin point it?Or what about comparing an odor with someone and having the comparisons of what the odor smells like be completely different from one another?This is Top-Down processing.

Touch:

Top-down processing:You see a red hot stove and know that it would be unsafe to touch it based on your perception of the situation from previous knowledge.
Bottom-Up Processing :If you turn on the sink and get burned by the hot water,you will quickly learn not to do it again because it hurt
