He says it shouldn\'t kill your roses, but you, knowing that weeds and rose are pretty similar physiologically decide to do some research. You find out the active ingredient in the weed killer causes the stomata close when in contact with the chemical.

ANS: Stomata are found under plant leaves and are used for exchange of gases and they also release water vapor into the atmosphere.
Since the weed killer’s primary action is to close the stomata, it will most likely kill the roses too.

ANS: Since stomata is of primary importance to photosynthesis, it’s closing will lead to lack of the building blocks/molecules for the essentials for the plant. There would be less or no intake of CO2 and hence will lead to death of the plants.

ANS: Good air circulation is important to grow roses and it is recommended to grow the outside for this purpose. If the stomata closes, the roses will die. So the neighbour’s kind gift will most likely kill the roses too.
