When an object with mass 3.00kg is hung vertically from a spring of length 45.0cm the spring is streched to a length of 53.5cm. Find the length of the spring if the 3.00kg mass is removed and replaced with a 4.25kg object.

Solution

mg = kx

=> m1/m2 = x1/x2 ( where x is streched length)

=> X2 = 0.45/(3/4.25) = 0.6375 OR 63.75 cm

=> length of spring = 45+63.75 = 108.75 cm
