Part II. Answer the following questions (6x 3 - 15 pts) 1. Explain what makes reinforced concrete work as one of the most commonly used Mar 6st, 2018 construction material. List three unique properties/advantages of reinforced concrete as a construction material. Explain \"ductle failure. Why is this type of failure prefered over the britle failure? In the following figure, which point stands for the brittle failure condition? 2. - - 0,003 (-e, Strain ( 3. Explain why a minimum reinforcing ratio is required in a beam.

Solution

1) Introducing the reinforcing bars in concrete makes the concrete an excellent composite building material which can resist significance amount of tensile stresses/strain also. Construction of load bearing building elements like beam , slabs, etc is made possible due to the reinforced concrete only.Steel bars embedded in the tension zone of concrete make it able to tae tension.

Three advantages of reinforced concrete-:

i)There exists a perfect bond between the concrete and steel bars so that strain in concrete is equal to the strain in steel at the interface of concrete and steel.

ii)Introduction of steel in concrete makes it a ductile material which gives sufficient warnig before collapse.

iii) Embedding reinforcing bars in compression zone of concrete increases the compressive strength of member.

2) In ductile failure steel bars in concrete attains it maximum yields earlier than concrete and fail. This type of failure is preferred over brittle failure because it gives sufficient warning before failure.

C point stands for brittle failure as concrete attains its maximum yield earlier than steel.

3) Minimum reinforcing ratio is required in beam to resist the effect of loads and also control the cracking in concrete due to shrinkage and temperature variations.
