Consider the situation shown in the figure below. An electric field of 300 V/m is confined to a circular area d = 10.1 cm in diameter and directed outward perpendicular to the plane of the figure. Consider that the field is increasing at a rate of 18.2 V/m · s.

Consider the situation shown in the figure below. An electric field of 300 V/m is confined to a circular area d 10.1 cm in diameter and directed outward perpendicular to the plane of the figure. Consider that the field is increasing at a rate of 18.2 V/m·s. (a) What is the direction of the magnetic field at the point P, r13.6 cm from the center of the circle? upwards downwards (b) what is the magnitude of the magnetic field at the point P, r = 13.6 cm from the center of the circle?

Solution

a) From Right hand Rule, thumb pointing in direction of E

so upwards

b) B(r) = d2 * (dE/dt) / 8 r c2

= (0.1012 * 18.2) / (8 * 0.136 * (3 * 108)2)

= 1.90 * 10-18 T
