Differentiate between the following in terms of constraintsc

Differentiate between the following in terms of constraints/challenges and provide an example for each:

a. Soft real time system

b. Hard real time system

c. Embedded real time system

d. Distributed real time system

Solution

A real-time system is one that must process information and produce a response within a specified time.

Soft Real Time Systems

If a real time system is acceptable to a certain timed out computations then it would be known as soft real time systems. Even though the computations are slightly intimely there is nothing which the world is loosing. For example, consider retrieving a phone contact in your mobile. It is expected to show up the contact immediately, even though it takes more than expected time nothing is going wrong. The delay in computations will result in degradation in performance. It is acceptable to some extent, unless if performance measure reaches to zero.

Hard Real Time Systems

Unlike soft real time systems, these systems are not acceptable to any slight deviations in timeliness of the computations. A hard real-time system (also known as an immediate real-time system) is hardware or software that must operate within the confines of a stringent deadline. The application may be considered to have failed if it does not complete its function within the allotted time span. Examples of hard real-time systems include components of pacemakers, anti-lock brakes and aircraft control systems. late computation may lead to severe hazard.

Embedded Real Time System

Real-time systems are computer systems that monitor, respond to, or control an external environment. This environment is connected to the computer system through sensors, actuators, and other input-output interfaces. Embedded Real Time system is ubiquitous. Almost all the electronic devices in todays world would come into the applications of embedded real time systems. These systems have very small and fixed activity to be performed. Thus a low set of essential components are in hand, compliying with overall size of the device conditions.

Distributed Real Time systems

If the real-time computer system is distributed, it consists of a set of (computer) nodes interconnected by a real-time communication network then we call it as distributed real time systems
