The total profit for a company in February was 20% higher than it was in January. The total profit for the two months was $157,498.
Find the profit for each month.
I was thinking (.20)x + y = 157,498 but I don\'t think it makes sense..thank you
Solution
Let us assume the Profit for January = x
Then by data, profit for February=x+20% of x=1.2x.
Total profit for January and February= x+1.2x=2.2x algebraically.
The given profit for months of January and Februar=$157 498
Therefore the required equation is:
Agebraic profit = actaual profit.
2.2x=$157498.
Solve for x, and you get the profit for January=x=157498/2.2
=$71590
So, the profit for February=1.2x=1.2*71590=$85908.
