Organisms that dwell deep in the ocean live in an environment of extremely low temperature. If you were to compare the cellular membranes of these organisms to land-dwelling organisms, what differences would you expect to find in the composition of their membranes in order to maintain appropriate membrane fluidity?

Solution

Organisms living in extreme cold conditions will have the highest percentage of unsaturated fatty acid chains in their membranes. The unsaturated fatty acids maintain fluidity of the cell membranes which is essential for biological activity.

Land dwelling animals will have relatively lower percentage of unsaturated fatty acids, since the land temperatures are higher. Land animals will have more of saturated fatty acids which keeps the membrane structure solid and intact otherwise it would just collapse like a drop of oil.
