3. (10 points) Explain in your language for why the Sun can maintain its gravitational equilibrium.
Solution
The other name of the gravitational equilibrium maintained by the sun is hydrostatic equilibrium. This kind of equilibrium is due to the outward push of internal gas pressure and the inward pull of gravity.
The outward push against gravity comes from internal pressure that exactly balances gravity at each point, thereby keeping the Sun stable in size.
As the weight of superjacent layers within the Sun will increase with depth, as will the pressure, as a result of the pressure within the Sun\'s core makes the gas hot and dense enough to sustain fusion. This energy discharged by fusion then heats the gas and maintains the pressure that keeps the Sun in the balance against the inward pull of gravity.
Due to these reasons, sun can main the gravitational equilibrium.
