A projectile of mass 0.5 kg is fired upward with a velocity of 500 m/s. Determine the specific kinetic energy (ke) Express the specific kinetic energy in kilojoules per kilogram to two significant figures. If the sum of KE and PE is to remain constant, determine the maximum vertical distance the projectile will travel. Express the specific kinetic energy in kilojoules per kilogram to two significant figures.

Solution

a.

specific kinetic energy= ( (1/2)mu2)/m

=(1/2)u2

=( 1/2)(5002)

=125000J/kg

=125 Kj/Kg

b.

By law of conservation of energy

KE=mgh

(1/2)mu2=mgh

h=(1/2)u2 *(1/g)

=(125Kj/kg)*(1/9.8)

=12.75m
