The particles in the nucleus of an atom are approximately 10

The particles in the nucleus of an atom are approximately 1.00×1015 m apart, while the electrons in an atom are about 1.00×1010 m from the nucleus.

Part A

Calculate the electrical repulsion between two protons in a nucleus if they are 1.50×1015 m apart.

Part B

How many pounds would the force be?

Part C

If you were holding these protons, do you think you could feel the effect of this force? (yes or no)

Part D

Calculate the electrical attraction that a proton in a nucleus exerts on an orbiting electron if the two particles are 1.19×1010 m apart.

Part E

If you were holding the electron, do you think you could feel the effect of this force? (yes or no)

Solution

Part a

The force of electric repulsion between two protons each of charge q ,

and seperated by a distance R = 1.50×1015 m is

                              F = k q * q / R^2

                                 = + ( 8.98*10^ 9 * 1.602 * 10^-19 *1.602 * 10^-19 ) / (1.50×1015 m)^2

               Repulsive force    F = 102.428 N

part B ) one pound of force = 4.44822 N

             repulsive froce in pounds = 102.428 / 4.44822 = 23.026 pounds

Part C) yes ofcourse any one can feel 23.026 pounds in hands

Part D) The force of attraction between proton and electron

                                 F = k q * q / R^2

                                 = + ( 8.98*10^ 9 * 1.602 * 10^-19 *1.602 * 10^-19 ) / (1.19×1010 m )^2

                                 = 1.627 *10^-8 N

Part E) No , since the force neglegible to feel.
