Solution
Muscles contain muscle fibers or myofibers, which contain tubular myofibrils. Myofibrils contain repeating units called sarcomeres. These are considered as basic units of muscles.
Sarcomeres contain myosin thick filaments and actin thin filaments. The active sites on actin are covered by tropomyosin so that myosin cannot bind to actin. Calcium ions bind to troponin-C so that tropomyosin undergoes structural changes and thereby, active sites on actin are exposed. myosin heads bind to actin to allow muscle contraction.
