Degarmo\'s Materials and Processes In Manufacturing.. by JT. Black, Ronald A, Kohser.
Eleventh Edition
1. What is heat treating?
2. What is the deciding factor on the end result of a heat treatment process?
3. If you have a part that is to brittle/ hard to machine, how could you make it machine able?
4. If you have a final machined part and you need the part to be hard, what would you do?
5. Explain heat treatment with regards to grain structure.
6. what else can be a result from heat treatment?
Solution
1. Heat treatment is a process in which a material is alternatively heated and cooled to alter its physical properties.
2. The end result in a heat treatment is the altered mechanical property of the material. The deciding factor is the microstructure.
3. A material has to be sufficiently soft for machine. If the material is brittle and hard, it has to be softened by annealing.
4. For imparting hard surface a suitable case hardening treatment is to carried out, such as carburising, nitriding or cyaniding.
5. In general , the size of the grains at the end of the process decides the physical properties. .
