cylinder with height 11m and radius 3m is filled with water

cylinder with height 11m and radius 3m is filled with water and must be emptied through an outlet pipe 2m above the top of the cylinder. Compute the work required to empty the water in the top half tank. Be sure to clearly set up the needed integral. Whater has a density of 1000 kg/m^3. SHOW WORK!!!!

Solution

Volume of water = r2h = *9*11 = 99 = 311.018 m3
Mass of water = 1000*311.018 = 311018 kg
Centre of gravity of this water will be at the middle of the cylinder, i.e 11/2 m below its top.

Hence to empty the cylinder the centre of gravity of the water has to be moved 5.5 + 2 m = 7.5 mtr
Hence work needed to be done = mgh = 311018*9.8*7.5 = 22859823 J = 22.86 MJ
