Solution

Q. 1) The calorie content of the various macro nutrients in a tuna salad sandwich are as under:

i. Carbohydrate:   @4kcal per gram in 35 grams i.e. 140kcal

ii. Fat : @ 9kcal per gram in 7 grams i.e. 63 kcal

iii. Protein: @ 4 kcal per gram in 18grams i.e. 72kcal

1A) The total calories in the tuna salad sandwich are 140 + 63 + 72 = 275 kcal

1B) The calorie content of 35 grams of Carbohydrate is 140 kcal. Therefore, the percentage of calories from Carbohydrate to the total calorie content is 140/275*100 i.e. 50.91 %

Q2) 2 A) The total daily calorie requirement is 2150 calories. %% % of this calorie requirement is %% % of 2150 i.e. 1182.50 calories which have to come from Carbohydrate.

2 B) Since Carbohydrate contains calories @4kcal per gram, 1182.50 calories would require 1182.5/4 i.e. 295.63 grams of Carbohydrate.

Q3) 3 A) If the daily calorie intake is 1850kcal, and 25 % calories have to come from Protein, the total calories that have to come from Protein are 25 % of 1850 kcal i.e. 462.50 kcal.

3B) If 20 % calories have to come from Fat and the total calorie requirement is 1850 kcal, then , the total calories that have to come from Fat are 20 % of 1850 kcal i.e. 370 kcal.

Q4) 4 A) The Applebee’s dinner contains 950 kcal. 25% of these come from Fat, i.e. @5 % of 950 kcal or 237.50 kcal. Since 1 gram of Fat contains 9 kcal, the Fat content of the Applebee’s dinner is 237.5/9 = 26.39 grams

4B)The total daily calorie intake is 2100 calories. Since the Applebee’s dinner has 950 kcal, the percentage of total 2100 calories represented by the Applebee’s dinner is 950/2100*100 or, 45.24%.
