What differences would you see in the oxygen update, oxygen deficit and oxygen debt in individuals with sickle cell compared to individuals without ?
Solution
Sickle cell anemia is a genetic disease of hematopoietic system, in which the red blood cells become sickle shaped and cannot carry oxygen. The symptoms include the decreased haemoglobin, high reticulocyte count and bilirubin levels. The high bilirubin is due to the damage of abnormal RBC.
In sickle cell patients, the oxygen uptake during resting conditions is almost normal to that of the individuals without sickle cells. But during exercise, they typically fail to meet the oxygen deficit and oxygen debt because increased oxygen demands cannot be met be sickle cells as their oxygen carrying capacity is lesser than the normal individuals.
