A manufacturer sells a processor in unpipelined and pipeline

A manufacturer sells a processor in unpipelined and pipelined form. The pipelined processor has six pipeline stages. A program runs in 30 seconds on the unpipelined processor. What is the shortest time the program would take on the pipelined processor? An assemble instruction takes 120 ns to be processed on the unpipelined processor. How long does it take on the pipelined processor.

Solution

a) As given the program runs 30 sec in unpipelined processor

Cycle time of unpipelined processor = 30 sec

pipelined processor has six pipelined stages so the cycle time gets reduce in case of pipelined processor.

T (Pipelined) = 30/6 = 5 sec

so the pipelined processor would process each instruction in 5 sec.

b) T(unpipelined processor) = 120 ns

T(Pipelined) = 120ns/6 = 20ns

In each 20ns one instruction gets processed.
