Peak inverse voltage (PIV) is the maximum reverse voltage that a diode experiences in a circuit and should be smaller than its breakdown voltage. What is the PIV of the diode in a half-wave rectifier with a capacitive filter? What is the PIV of the diodes in a full-wave bridge rectifier with a capacitive filter?

Solution

The PIV(Peak Inverse Voltage) of the diode in a Halfwave Rectifier with a capacitive filter is 2Vp.

Here, the capacitor is connected across the Load.

During the Positive Half cycle of the input voltage, the capacitor is charged to Vp. During the Negative Half cycle of Input voltage the capacitor is dicharged to load from Vp. Hence considering the maximum voltage across diode during reverse biased condition the diode anode voltage = -Vp

Therefore PIV = Vp - (-Vp) = 2Vp.

In case of Full wave rectificer he PIV(Peak Inverse Voltage) of the diode in a Full wave Rectifier with a capacitive filter is 2Vmax.

PIV = Vm + Vm = 2Vm.
