13.) Calculate the slope of the line passing through the given points. Then indicate whether the line rises, falls, is horizontal, or is vertical.

(-2,4) and (-1,-1)

Solution

Slope of a line passing through the points (x1, y1) and (x2, y2) is (y2-y1) / ( x2-x1) or Rise / Run

Rise means how many units you move up or down from point to point.

Run means how far left or right you move from point to point.

when a line has a positive slope it rises up left to right.

when a line has a negative slope it falls left to right.

Here, (x1, y1) = (-2, 4) and (x2, y2) = (-1, -1)

Slope of the line =(-1-4)/ -1+ 2 = - 5/1 = - 5 < 0

Since the slope is negative, the line falls as it moves from left to right.
