Solution

Q.1

(a) False

Transpiration is the process in which the water is sucked in through roots and evaporates through the plant leaves into the environment. It helps in cooling the plants in hot weathers and maintains the water cycle by giving back almost 10% of the water back to vapor phase. It helps in photosynsthesis but not directly, yet it creates a negative pressure and thus helps in drawing the water and minerals which are used in photosynthesis.

(b) True

There is no direct relation between altitude and evaporation rate but it relates to the temperature and pressure. At higher altitudes the air pressure is low and if we heat the liquid to the same temperature as that in lower altitudes, the liquid reaches boiling point faster and at lower temperature because of the low pressure. Therefore the evaporation rate is faster at the same temperature.

(c)True

Rate of evaporation is directly connected to relative humidity of the place at a given temperature, because RH defines the % age of maximum vapors capacity the air is holding at the given temperature, and more RH means higher the %age of water vapor. So if the air already contains higher percent of water vapor, the rate of evaporation slows down because the space for more vapor is lesser.

(d) False

Read this statement \"Although pan evaporation typically overestimate the rate of evaporation from open water bodies, they can be corrected using empirical \'pan coefficients\' (Eagleson, 1970;Shuttleworth, 1993)\"
