A physician routinely makes physical examinations of children and is concerned that a three year old girl has a height of only 82 centimeters. Heights of 3 year old girls have a mean of 97.5cm and a standard deviation of 6.9cm. Use the rnge rule of thumb to find the maximum and minmum usual heights of thee year old girls. Based on the result, is the height of 82cm unusual? Should the physician be concerned? explain.
Solution
standard deviation is a quantity expressing by how much the members of a group differ from the mean value for the group.
mean is 97.5 cm and standard deviation is 6.9
usual heights range will be 97.5 + 6.9 = 103.4 and 97.5 - 6.9 = 90.6
so the range will be [90.6 , 103.4]
so the height of 82cm does not comes under the usual height so it is a matter of concern for the physian
