A shaft diameter 150mm running at 500rpm is supported by journal bearings, which have a coefficient of friction of 0.02. The load on each bearing is 20kN. Calculate, for each bearing:
   (a) the power dissipated by friction
   (b) the heat generated per minute

Solution

tHe heat generated on a bearing H = k x pi x f x P x L x D2 N

where k = mechanical equivalent of heat, pI = 3.14, F = FRICTION COEFFICIENT,

P = pressure on projected area of the bearing ( W/LD) where L is the length of bearing

D - diameter of the bearing

N - rpm

Hence H = 1177500 Knm/sec = 11.77x 106 joules /sec

Heat generated by each bearing per minute = 11.77x 106 x 60 joules
