Susie is a 55-year old woman, 63 in. tall, and 145lbs. After performing a PFT, her values were as follows: FVC = 2.7L and FEV1.0 = 2.0L. Were her values normal? Provide evidence for why or why not?

Solution

Pulmonary function tests is used to measure how well the lungs take in and exhale air and how efficiently they transfer oxygen into the blood

FVC is the amount of air which can be forcibly exhaled from the lungs after taking the deepest breath possible.

In this case, lower limit of normal for FVC (L) is 1.95, FEV1 (L) is 1.65, and the ratio (FEV/FVC%) is 73.6%, and the predicted value of FVC (L) of patient is 2.94, FEV1 (L) is 2.37, and the ratio of FEV/FVC is 83.6%.

From the above mentioned result, we can confirm that her value is not normal.
