An airplane flying into a headwind travels the 1200-mile flying distance between two cities 2 hours and 30 minutes. On the return flight, the airplane travel this distance in 2 hours. Find the airspeed of the plane and the speed of the wind, assuming that both remain constant. Airspeed mi/h wind speed mi/h
Solution
Speed against wind= 1200/2.5=480 miles per hour
Returning speed=1200/2=600 miles per hour
Speed of airplane= (1/2)(480+600)= 540 miles per hour
speed of wind=(1/2)(600-480)=60 miles per hour
