Why can electrical signals in neurons be only transmitted in
Why can electrical signals in neurons be only transmitted in one direction? Please explain briefly. Essay answers are limited to about 500 words (3800 characters maximum, including spaces).
Solution
The neurons in a nerve are arranged in a series i.e., the head of a neuron is connected to the tail of the preceding neuron via a synapse. The conduction of nerve depends upon the location of the voltage-dependent Na channels in the membrane and their location supports the uni-directional flow of the nerve conduction. Moreover. in the synapse the nerve ending releases neurotransmitters and the receptor for the neurotransmitters are located in the dendrites of the next cell. Altogether the location of the voltage dependent Na channels, site of secretion of the neurotransmitters and the location of their receptors altogether makes the conduction uni-directional.
