Solution
1). Splenda
2). Scientist Shashikant Phadnis a chemist in Elizabeth College, London accidentally discovered splenda. He added a chemical with sulfuryl chloride and added drop by drop sugar solution to it. In this reaction, a new compound 1‘, 4, 6, 6‘- tetrachloro - 1‘, 4, 6, 6’ - tetra-deoxygalactosucrose is discovered. He tasted it and recognized that it is sweet. However, the chemical with sulfuryl chloride is highly toxic.
In the next year, two scientists Hough and Phadins worked with the Tate & Lle, a British sugar company and synthesized chlorinated sugars. Finally, one with three chlorine atoms is found to be 600 times sweeter than sugar and is non-toxic. Later, it is named as sucralose (Splenda)
The chemical name of sucralose is, 4,1\',6\'-Trichloro-4,1\',6\'-trideoxygalactosucrose. It is the most widely used artificial sweetener in many countries including the United States.
