A) Identify the input and output transducers in this device
B) Describe 3 limitations of this device.
C) Describe 2 modifications you would include in the design of the telegraph to improve its performance and WHY?
Solution
A) The input transducer is the key when pushed down closes the electrical circuit and when released opens it.
The output transducer is the electromagnetic coil which pulls down the sounder and releases it.
B) The dots and dashes are produced alternately, when the electromagnet pulls and releases the sounder. They cannot be produced in series.
Metal is completely exposed without any insulation, leading to losses and discomfort while operating.
The bent strips of metal are supposed to act as springs which may lose the stiffness after some use.
C ) The portions of the metal strip which come into contact with the fingers may be islulated with a piece of plastic or wood.
Springs may provided at both input and output strips to provide good push and pull effect.
