What happens to ion channels, specifically sodium concentrations inside and outsides of a cell, for a runner who is sweating a lot?
Solution
Recommend daily intake of sodium is 1500mg. Athelet sweat on an average 1200ml per hour during exercises wherein sodium content varies from 115-5000 mg per 1000ml of sweat which may result in muscle cramping, electrolyte imbalance and hyponatremia. Hence they are advised to to take diet with proper sodium content. During exercise sodium and potassium concentration is maintained by sodium-potassium pump located in phosppholipid bilayer. It pumps out 3 sodium ions for every two potassium uptake along with phosphorylation of ADP to ATP which generates energy during exercise and also regulates action potential.
