Compare and contrast emphysema and chronic bronchitis.

Solution

The primary muscles used in ventilation are:

Diaphragm , intercostals and abdominal muscles used during inspiration and expiration .

Lung compliance : It is the measurement of how much pressure is required to produce a change in volume of lungs. high degree of compliance means loss of elastic recoil of lungs as in emphysema and low compliance means greater change in pressure is needed for a given change in volume as in pneumonia .

Emphysema and chronic bronchitis are two different types of chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD) . in emphysema there is a gradual destruction of alveoli where as in chronic bronchitis lungs become inflamed and affects wind pipe due to severe infection of lungs .

In emphysema there is shortness of breath as recoiling capacity of lungs diminishes where as in chronic bronchitis there is severe coughing .

Emphysema diseased persons are called pink puffers where as chronic bronchitis diseased persons are called blue bloaters .
