Let us assume that you have two devices one has a sensitivity of -3.25 (negative 3.25) and the other has a sensitivity of +3.52. Which one is better suited, if you are looking for a device with higher sensitivity? What makes you think so?

Solution

a) Both sensitivity and response time are important in temperature sensing device. A temperature mesuring instrument should reach the temperature of source as early as possible. Response time of a measuring instrument is defined as the time taken by it to reach source temperature. For a rapid response thin wire with low specific heat and high convection heat transfer coefficient is used. The sensitivity of a temperature measuring instrument is defined as the time reqiured to reach 63.2% of the value of initial temperature differnce. The lower the value of response time the high is the sensitivity hence if the response time is fast, the sooner it will reach the tempeature difference of 63.2% hence high will be its sensitivity.

b) The device with sensitivity of -3.25 is better suited since sensitivity indicates time reqiured by the temperature measuring device to reach 63.2% of initial temperature difference hence -3.25 sensitivity indicates faster response and thus it is better suited.
