Your patient has been taking thyroid drugs for about 16 months and has recently noted palpitations and some heat intolerance. Should you be concerned about this, or is this a fairly benign reaction to thyroid replacement? Explain your answer. Refernces must be within 5 years
Solution
Palpitations and heat intolerance are mostly found in hyperthyroid patients. These are usually one among the symptoms of a person suffering from hyperthyroidism. Hence if the patient used to suffer from hypothyroidism and is complaining about the new changes in his bodily behaviors then he must get his thyroid checked and get a dosage change or switch to a new drug for thyroid. This condition may occur if the patient has started a new form of diet where his diet starts regulating his thyroid levels and his body starts producing the hormone TSH in the required amount to regulate the T3 and T4 hormones do their function and hence the dosage of the drug taken for drug becomes an excess amount of thyroxine in the body because of which the body starts reacting in a different manner.
