Chapter 10 Operating Systems
Read this book Computer Science Illuminated, Sixth Edition by Dale and Lewis,Chapter 10. pages. 337-344 & 360-361 and answer the questions. Do not use direct quotes from the text, but make it clear that you have read the text to answer the questions.
1. What are the two primary services an operating system provides?
2. Does the computer you’re using now use timesharing? Explain. Does it use multiprogramming? Explain.
3. Would you withhold sensitive personal and medical information from your doctor if you knew there was a possibility it might not remain private? Why or why not?
Solution
1. The primary services provided by operating system are:
2. Yes, the computer uses timesharing and multiprogramming. Timesharing is a process in which different users from different locations can access the memory at same time. In other words, the time to access memory for execution will be equally given to all the processes by creating a virtual memory for each process. Multiprogramming is a process in which multiple programs can be run at the same time. It is also known as parallel processing. It is the ability of the operating system to execute multiple programs on a single processor.
3. We go to a doctor only to get rid of our illness or medical issues. If we don\'t open up everything about our problem, then the doctor cannot treat us with a proper medicine. So, what I feel is we shouldn\'t withhold any medical information from our doctor because sometimes he treats us depending on our past medical conditions. So it is better not to withhold any medical information from our doctor even if we knew that it might not remain private because at the end, all we need is whatever problem we have should be cured properly. However, few doctors have nothing to do with our personal sensitive information. So, our personal information can be withhold from doctors if we feel that it might not remain private.
