Endothermy is the ability of an organism to maintain body temperatures higher than the surrounding environmental temperatures.

Bluefin tuna fishes are endothermic. Thus they have capability to migrate over long distances in atlantics across many varying ambient temperatures while maintaining a higher body temperature. They use aerobic heat production rates in soft tissues wherein blood vessels are arranged as counter current heat exchangers between the endothermic tissue and gills and also have thick body insulation. These vascular counter-current heat exchangers present in bluefin tuna enable them to maintain higher temperatures, above the ambient water temperature, in deep red muscle fibers and their critical organs.
