Solution
Estrone (not esterone) is a hormone that falls in the category of a broader class of hormones known as Estrogen, which also includes estriol and estradiol (major component). Since estrone is a minor fraction of estrogenic hormones, we will concentrate on estrogens and study its normal values in the given phases.
Estrogen is the primary female reproductive hormone or sex hormone which drives the different phases of the reproductive cycle in females, though it is also found in males.
The reproductive phase in females starts from the onset of puberty. The monthly menstrual cycle is characterized by follicular phase, ovulation (mid-cycle) phase, luteal phase and menstruation. This cycle is halted in case of pregnancy. Usually, after the age of 50, menstrual cycle in women stops and this phase is known as post-menopause. In some case, unnatural stoppage of the menstrual cycle is characterized as an ovarian failure.
Normal values of estrogen in the reproductive phases can be tabulated as follows:
| Reproductive Phases | Normal values of estrogen hormone (picograms/ml) |
| Follicular | 20-400 |
| Luteal | 49-294 |
| Mid-cycle | 50-200 |
| Pregnancy | 150-8000 |
| Post-menopause | 0-40 |
| Ovarian failure | Less than 50 |
