Can we measure stress directly?
Solution
Stress is defined as internal resisting force per unit area. When we apply a force to an object then object is deformed then we can say that forces produces strains (fractional change in length) Hence Deformation can be measured directly and no need of other physical quantities required to measured deformation in object. Hence, they are primary function. We know that strains and stresses are directly related to each other for homogeneous, linear elastic and isotropic materials. Hence we can not measure stress directly.
