Please describe 1) the prerequisites 2) the fracture process 3) the prevention measures of fatigue failure?
Solution
1) PREREQUISITES:
It is the prior conditions required for the possibility of happening of a particular event.
2) FRACTURE PROCESS
It is the separation of a part into two or more pieces under the influence of a stress.
Fracture usually occurs due to the development of certain displacement discontinuity surfaces within the particular solid.
3) PREVENTIVE MEASURE OF FATIGUE FAILURE
A force lower than the tolerance limit of the solid can also cause fracture in it, if it is applied and removed repeatedly.
Fatigue failure starts with a microscopic crack which propagates after evry cycle of loading and unloading.
It can be prevented by making changes in the design stage of a solid or a joint. It has to be kept in mind that fatigue load is very low as compared to the maximum load limit of the solid.
Avoid stress concentrations at the joints and make the stress concentration (if any) come to the surface by proper heat treatment of that solid.
