The sixth grade is going on a field trip to a museum all day
The sixth grade is going on a field trip to a museum all day and the museum offers a school group price of $189 and each student will pay an equal part of that total. When 12 kids had to play in a baseball game that was cancelled and the rest of the students had to pay an extra dollar. How many students went on the trip and how much did each one pay?
Solution
You did not say what math you are taking, so I am not sure what method you were supposed to use to solve this problem. You can estimate.
If there were 54 kids originally going on the trip, each paid $3.5. When 12 kids cancelled, that left 42 kids going on the trip and each had to pay $4.50. You know this is your answer because $4.50 is $1 more than $3.50.
The price of the trip is $189. You know that the number of students is around 50, because losing 12 students only meant $12. Check your work.
$189/54= 3.5
54-12=42
$189/42= 4.5
Since 4.5 is one more than 3.5, you know that 54 kids going originally and 42 going after the basketball team leaves is the correct answer.
